I invented the name “Mystic Gohan” the same day I was born. When I was 5 years old, I had some coffee with Akira (yes, I said Akira because of that we are the bestest buddies), and when I uttered that phrase (when we spoke about the manga), his eyes glowed up, and he said “Man, I wished I could have used that phrase instead, it’s so much cooler, and you are the coolest man I know!”. So I took it as my mission to share that phrase among the fans to fulfill his wish.

Mike, I find that your doubts of this individual are ludicrous. What have you ever done for DBZ fandom? It’s people like myself & the individual you so rudely ridicule that are the true contributors to fandom. What have I done, you ask? Well if you really need to know, I’m the first person to use the word “Goku” in reference to the lead character. That was on the Pojo forums way back in maybe 2002. You won’t find any record of that word being used in that context previous to that time either. So, yeah it’s more of a contribution to Dragon Ball in general and not specifically to DBZ, even tho it was on a DBZ forum.I’ll add that it was a more or less original contribution and not simply taken from some old chinese story.

“Canon” in reference to the internal continuity of a fictional series basically started with Sherlock Holmes fandom around the 1930s. For fun, the Bakers Street Irregulars pretended that Holmes was a real person, and that Doyle’s stories about Holmes really had been written by Watson (which is how Doyle wrote most of the stories). So they used “canon” or “the sacred writings” as tongue-in-cheek names for the Holmes stories that had “really” happened, which more or less meant only those Doyle had written. However, some fans considered the few Holmes stories which Doyle wrote without Watson as the narrator to not be part of the canon either, for various reasons. So maybe your youtube commentor is just an extremely elderly Holmes fan.

While I disagree about the “being an ass” part, I’m totally with you on how straight it’s written. The person is writing this as if… dude… OBVIOUSLY they are the person who came up with it, and this is common knowledge. Do we really need to be explaining its origin, here?

The fact that the comment appears to be written so…straight is what gets me. The spelling and grammar doesn’t look like crap, he doesn’t explicitly sound like he is being an ass…it’s just…yeah.
